Beginning July 1, we’re partnering with Christmas in the Park for a special monthlong activation in the Terminal B baggage claim area. Running through July 31, the display features a festive sleigh, seasonal decor and even an SJC baby chick (Robbie!) — offering travelers a cheerful surprise upon arrival.
This collaboration is part of SJC’s ongoing efforts to deliver memorable, family-friendly moments throughout the terminal, connecting local traditions with the traveler experience.
Christmas in the Park is a beloved local nonprofit known for its whimsical winter installations, including decorated trees, animated exhibits and a 65-foot walk-through holiday tree. Each year, more than 700,000 guests visit the event in Plaza de César Chávez, making it one of the Bay Area’s most cherished seasonal traditions. We’re proud to bring a touch of that magic to SJC this summer.
This summer’s activation is also inspired by the meaningful history behind “Christmas in July.” The U.S. Army introduced the concept during World War II as part of a campaign to encourage families to mail gifts and cards early to troops stationed overseas. In 1944, the Army, along with the Navy and the U.S. Post Office, hosted a Christmas in July luncheon in New York to promote the effort, working with the advertising and greeting card industries to spread the message.
The goal was to ensure that packages and letters would arrive in time for the holidays, despite the long distances and logistical challenges of wartime mail delivery. Families were encouraged to send parcels between September 15 and October 15 to maximize the chances of timely arrival. This initiative helped boost troop morale by making sure they received reminders of home during the holiday season, even while far from loved ones.

We hope this tribute to a time-honored military tradition brings a little extra cheer to your journey through SJC.
