What to Expect When You’re Flying SJC

Flying can feel overwhelming if you don’t do it often, but our Airport is designed to be simple, welcoming and easy to navigate. Whether you’re heading out for work, vacation or visiting family, here’s your step-by-step guide to know exactly what to expect on your journey from curb to gate.
Arriving at the Airport
Parking
If you’re driving yourself, we offer several convenient parking options:
- Economy Lot 1: The most affordable choice for long stays, with free shuttles to both terminals every 7–10 minutes, 24/7.
- Hourly and Daily Lots: Closer to the terminals, perfect for short trips or quick drop-offs.
- EV drivers: Charge your vehicle in Hourly Lot 2 or Daily Lot 5 at no extra cost!
💡Tip: You can reserve parking for as little as 2 hours in advance. Book ahead to guarantee a spot!
Meeting & Dropping Off Passengers
If you’re picking up or dropping off a loved one, you have options:
- Use our free Cell Phone Waiting Area until your passenger is ready.
- Terminal A curbside: American, Delta, Frontier, United.
- Terminal B curbside: Alaska, Hawaiian, Southwest.
- International Arrivals: Alaska (from Mexico), Volaris, ZIPAIR. Pick up curbside at the International Arrivals Building, just past Terminal A.
Checking In
Most airlines let you check in online up to 24 hours before your flight. This is the fastest way to get your boarding pass. At the Airport, you’ll also find:
- Airline counters and kiosks in both terminals.
- Curbside bag check for some airlines, so you can hand off your luggage before even stepping inside.
💡Tip: Save time by checking in online and use a mobile boarding pass.
Getting Through Security (TSA)
Security is often the part travelers worry about most, but it’s straightforward if you’re prepared:
- ID: Travelers 18+ must present a REAL ID (or another acceptable ID) to board a domestic flight. Children under 18 do not need to provide ID when traveling within the United States.
- Expedited security clearance: TSA Precheck® and CLEAR are available at our Airport, helping you get through security faster and with less hassle.
- Standard screening: Place your items in bins and follow the 3-1-1 rule (3.4 oz liquids, all in 1 quart-sized bag, 1 per passenger).
- Family tip: Strollers, car seats and diaper bags are allowed through screening. TSA officers are used to helping families, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance.
💡Tip: Keep your ID and boarding pass handy until you’re past security. And good news, you can keep your shoes on when going through screening!
After Security
Now that you’re through, the hardest part is behind you: it’s time to relax! Terminals A and B are connected, so you can enjoy food, shopping and amenities across the Airport. Our simple, linear layout makes it easy to navigate (less than a mile from Gate 1 to Gate 36, with no tram required).
- Dining: From coffee and cocktails to comfort food favorites like mac and cheese, you’ll find everything from quick bites to sit-down meals.
- Shopping: Pick up travel essentials or something fun like Ernie + Friends merch, cozy socks, rice crispy treats or even dolls to surprise the kids.
- Amenities: Nursing rooms, family restrooms and a kids’ play area make traveling with little ones easier.
- The Club SJC: Located at Gates 8 and 15, these spacious lounges let you recharge, enjoy complimentary snacks and drinks and relax in comfort before your flight.
💡Tip: Your boarding pass works in both terminals, so feel free to explore!
Accessibility & Special Services
We are committed to making travel accessible and stress-free for all passengers.
- Need Wheelchair Assistance? Contact your airline ahead of time to have it ready when you arrive.
